Skagit County Travel Updates
A year-long construction project is underway on the SR 536 Skagit River Bridge in Mount Vernon, impacting traffic between downtown Mount Vernon and west Mount Vernon. Details, including detour routes and construction timelines, are available below. Please note that businesses on the west side of the Skagit River Bridge are open for business and ready to serve visitors!
November 1: Two-week closure of Skagit River Bridge
The State Route 536 Skagit River/Division Street Bridge will close to traffic in both directions for at least two weeks beginning November 1, in order to complete a bridge painting project nearly four months earlier than originally planned.
All eastbound passenger and freight vehicles must follow a signed detour using northbound Avon Allen Road, eastbound SR 20 and southbound I-5. Westbound SR 536 traffic should detour using northbound I-5 and westbound SR 20.
Provided weather cooperates, SR 536 is expected to fully reopen in time for the holiday season. No long-term lane closures are expected after the bridge reopens, but crews may remain in the area to complete work and remove machinery. Heavy rain or unexpected resource issues during the full closure could delay reopening the bridge.
Emergency service access maintained during full closure. Pedestrians, bicyclists and people using mobility devices will have access throughout the full closure, except when work requires closing the sidewalk. A free shuttle service will be available for people who wish to cross during the these bridge sidewalk closures. Pick-up and drop-off points are located near both ends of the bridge.
