October Travel

to the Skagit Valley

From beginning to end, October is packed with fall adventures in Skagit Valley. Visit a local farm, hike through colorful mountain landscapes, or spend the day at a fall festival. Wherever you go, bright foliage and stunning autumn views provide a backdrop for your adventure.

Festivals

Head to Anacortes to celebrate craft brewing along the shores of the Salish Sea at Bier Near the Pier. Try samples from participating breweries and wineries as you take in live music, or participate in their games and contests. This coastal town is the perfect place to take in stunning views, browse shops or visit a museum after the event.

The Festival of Family Farms on Oct 3 and 4 offers the perfect opportunity to take a road-trip-style farm tour, featuring unique farm experiences across 11 participating farms with free admission. Learn all about what goes into bringing food from the farm to your table, from growing crops to feeding animals.

Halloween

Downtowns across the valley welcome trick-or-treaters to local businesses for Halloween; The town of Concrete leads visitors through its history and mystery for ghost tours, and the Washington Shakespearean Society brings medieval magic to La Conner with it’s Hallowe’en-aissance Masquerade Ball.

Pumpkin Patches

And of course, what fall itinerary is complete without a trip to the pumpkin patch! There are plenty of incredible farms throughout the valley to visit. From finding the perfect decorative pumpkin for your porch to taking tractor rides or corn mazes, the Skagit Valley is the perfect place to have this classic fall experience.

Larches

October is still within the larch-viewing window! The best viewing opportunity is within the first couple of weeks of the month – the golden leaves stick around through mid-to-late October. Hikes near Skagit County provide a unique viewing experience away from the massive crowds. Try Ruby Mountain or Crater Mountain hikes, both in the Ross Lake Recreation Area. More options include the Easy Pass or Grasshopper Pass Trails.

Birding + Wildlife

It’s the start of the stunning birding season in Skagit Valley, as snow geese begin to migrate into the Valley from Wrangel Island, Russia. Their arrival is one of the most incredible wildlife displays in the valley, as they move in enormous flocks – a dream for any wildlife photographer. You can see them on Fir Island and around the Skagit Delta.

Whale watching isn’t a summer-only activity (if you’re okay with bundling up!) Orcas are seen in the Salish Sea year-round, making fall a great time to see them with lesser crowds. Deception Pass Tours offers after dark cruises – where haunting tales and spooky park history are shared along the way!
